Environmental Intelligence Across Aquaculture: A Look at Our Macroalgae Project in Tanzania
In Chile, one of the world’s leading salmon-producing countries dissolved oxygen fluctuations remain one of the most critical environmental and operational risks. Hypoxic events can impact fish welfare, biomass performance, and regulatory compliance. That is why we are proud to contribute to a new chapter in smart aquaculture and environmental oversight through our collaboration with Chile’s Superintendency of the Environment (SMA).
Together, we have deployed PREDIMAR, an advanced oxygen prediction system designed to help anticipate environmental changes before they become critical.
Traditional monitoring tools provide real-time data. But in dynamic fjord systems, reacting in real time is often not enough.
With PREDIMAR, we move one step further.
Our system combines:
This allows us to predict dissolved oxygen concentration up to 48 hours in advance, offering authorities and producers an early-warning window to take preventive action.
By anticipating oxygen drops, salmon farms can:
For us at BiOceanOr, this is what data-driven aquaculture truly means: transforming complex environmental signals into actionable decisions.
The collaboration with SMA reflects a shared ambition: integrating science, technology, and preventive regulation to improve environmental performance across the salmon farming sector.
Through this partnership, predictive insights are not only available to producers but also strengthen institutional coordination and environmental supervision. This represents a significant evolution toward preventive environmental management, aligned with the sustainability challenges facing the Chilean salmon industry.
The PREDIMAR initiative is supported by the French government’s FASEP programme, reinforcing the role of Franco-Chilean innovation partnerships in advancing sustainable aquaculture.
At BiOceanOr, we are convinced that technological innovation must serve both industry performance and ecosystem protection.
In October, in Puerto Montt, Chile, we took another step toward a more sustainable and resilient aquaculture industry.
During the PREDIMAR 2025 Workshop, we brought together authorities, scientists and industry professionals to present the first prototype of the PREDIMAR system, developed by BiOceanOr in collaboration with the Superintendencia del Medio Ambiente and CUNLOGAN S.A., with the support of the French Government’s FASEP programme.
This pioneering system predicts dissolved oxygen concentration up to 48 hours in advance, helping anticipate environmental risks and protect life in salmon farming sites, an innovation designed to address climate change and sustainability challenges.
The contributions of María Inés Owens Muñoz (SMA), Ivonne Mansilla (SMA), Christian Bull (Cunlogan), Gregory Maturana Niklitschek (Cunlogan), Olivier Besson (French Government), and Gaëtan Fabritius (BiOceanOr) fostered an open dialogue on how predictive technology can become a strategic ally for environmental management and the future of Chilean salmon farming.
Climate variability, increasing regulatory expectations, and ecosystem sensitivity require new tools. At BiOceanOr, we see predictive modelling not as an option, but as a necessary evolution for the aquaculture sector.
By combining AI-powered oxygen forecasting, environmental expertise, and close collaboration with regulators, we are helping shape a more resilient and responsible future for salmon farming.
Because sustainable aquaculture starts with anticipating what the ocean will do next.
